About Me

Mark is an author-illustrator and teaches children’s book illustration online and at the Art School of the Austin Museum of Art.

His book for upper elementary and middle grades
“Raising La Belle” (Eakin Press) tells about an early colonial shipwreck recovered off the Texas coast and won the Spur Award (2003) for “best juvenile nonfiction western book.” Spur Awards are awarded annually by the Western Writers of America for distinguished writing about the American West. “Raising La Belle” also won the U.S. Maritime Literature Award for that year.

Mark has illustrated his own and other authors’ books.
His watercolor illustrations have also appeared for many years in the children’s magazines “Appleseeds”, “Calliope”, “Cobblestone”, “Cricket”, “Faces”, “Footsteps”, “Odyssey” and “Pockets.”
